In October, 2006,
three Public Scoping Meetings were held to address the Southern Nevada Supplemental (Ivanpah) Airport. At the meetings,
the issue of surface transportation received more comments than any other category. Currently, there are repeated,
and sometimes severe, periods of traffic congestion on Interstate 15 in and around Ivanpah Valley. Consequently, deep
concerns are predominant about future transportation needs when millions of air travelers will be using Ivanpah Airport
annually. Surely, enlightened modes of surface transportation will be key for the success of Ivanpah Airport. Of
course, dozens of other topics will be addressed in the EIS as the development of Ivanpah Airport proceeds.
The Joint Lead Agencies (Federal Aviation Administration and Bureau of Land Management) have indicated in Newsletter
Number 1 of the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport EIS, datedJune, 2007, that they are planning to convene more public information
meetings later this year. These meetings could cover topics such as "airspace study, purpose and need and alternatives
screening process," the newsletter states.
